Prof. Suman Kundu

Dr. Suman Kundu is currently Senior Professor and Director, BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus (on leave as Professor of the Department of Biochemistry, University of Delhi).  Ph.D. from Banaras Hindu University (1999), he was a post-doctorate in Iowa State University, USA and a Research Associate at Pioneer Hi-Bred, Dupont, USA. He was a Lecturer in School of Biotechnology, BHU (January-December 2006) before moving to University of Delhi as a Reader, where he was subsequently promoted to Associate Professor (2009) and Professor (2012). He was honored with S.P. Tyagi Oration Award (2017) and Indo-US Research Fellowship (2010) and inducted as the Elected Fellow of Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences in March 2021. He has published more than 90 research papers and 5 book chapters, with 1 patent to his credit. He has guided several Post-doctorates, Ph.D, M.Phil and M.Sc students for research and delivered more than 80 invited talks in India and abroad. His research interests focus on structure-function-stability relationship in blood substitutes; his laboratory is actively involved in engineering heme and polypeptide stability in recombinant hemoglobin for application as hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier. His group is also engaged in understanding the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease using metabolomics and proteomics approaches and is attempting to decipher effective therapeutics to combat the debilitating disease. Currently, the laboratory is dedicated towards structure-aided drug discovery initiatives to identify novel small molecules to treat cardiovascular diseases and rheumatoid arthritis.  

He is the Founder Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Proteins and Proteomics (Springer Nature) and executive council member of Proteomics Society (India) and Protein Society (India). He was the former Director, University of Delhi South Campus and Acting Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Delhi. He was also the Director of the Centre for India-Canada Studies.
