A graduate mining engineer from IIT(ISM), Dhanbad with PGDBM from XLRI, Pankaj Satija has blended mining operation with framework of Safety, Health and Environment. As a PMP certified professional, he has undergone Indo German Manager Programme at Germany, Global Advance Management Programme at Beijing, Tata Group Executive Leadership Development Program at UK and General Management Programme from CEDEP, France. He is also a LEAD Fellow of cohort 19. He is a certified coach from Erickson Coaching International.
Pankaj Satija works as the Executive Vice President -Corporate Affairs, JSW Group. He has more than 30 years of experience in Strategic Planning, Project Management, Mine Planning, Mining Operations, Training, Production and Maintenance.
He has been in task force for Sustainable Development Framework for Indian Mining Industry constituted by Ministry of Mines, taskforce for Modernisation of DGMS constituted by Ministry of Labour and Employment, taskforce for framing rules of Occupational health, safety and working conditions in mines constituted by Ministry of Labour and Employment, DGMS, Committee for Identification of Collaboration between DGMS and IBM, task force for suggesting alternative mechanism for computation of ASP of Iron ore, member of Inter-Ministerial Committee of Ministry of Coal, Govt. of India for making suggestions on augmentation and consumption of domestic coking coal by steel sector, member of Board of Mining Examinations (Metal) of the Ministry of Labour and Employment and member of committee for preparation of list of latest equipment, machinery and mining technology used in Non-Coal mining and suggest training programmes and collaborations with institutions for officers of DGMS. He is also a member in Executive Committee of NMET as Technical Expert.
Under his leadership, vetiver plantation experiment was carried out first time in Indian mining industry with collaboration of IIT Kharagpur at Joda East mine of Tata Steel in 2012. Under his leadership, Sukinda chromite mine of Tata Steel became the first mine in the country where pilot launch of SDF (Sustainable Development Framework) was done in Jan 2016. Under his leadership, Noamundi became the first mine in country where pilot launch for Drone Application in Mine Monitoring (DAMM) was launched in Jan 2017. ‘SABAL – Centre for Abilities’ (2nd in India) was also started at Noamundi under his leadership which is grooming PWD (Person with Disability) for a brighter future by offering various skill development courses. “Tejsawini”, upskilling female workforce for mainstreaming them into core production processes as HEMM and crane operator was initiated under his leadership at raw material location. Under his leadership, Tata Steel Mining Limited was bestowed with the Responsible Chromium Award from the International Chromium Development Association (ICDA) for its performance in Sustainability for the 1st time in Chromite ore industry in India.
He is the recipient of National Geoscience Award 2022. He was conferred with the prestigious Global Sustainable Mining Award at the 3rd Odisha Mining and Infrastructure Conclave by His Excellency, the Governor of Odisha in 2025. He was conferred with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by the IIT ISM Dhanbad in 2025. He is the recipient of the prestigious ‘Nature Care Award 2024’ as corporate leader and social thinker by Nature Care Initiative. He is the recipient of Bala Gulshan Tandon Excellence Award from FIMI for his significant contribution towards assisting the mine achieving excellence through Sustainable mining for 2016-17. He is a recipient of Best Corporate Management Innovative Excellence Award 2016-17 at GeoMinTech symposium, Bhubaneswar. He is the recipient of IME Journal annual award for innovation in 2017 and as well in 2023, FIMI Gem Granite Sustainability Award 2014-15 and Excellent Performer Award 2015 from Legasis. MEAI bestowed him with Service Excellence Award for his contributions to mineral sector of the country for 2017-18, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023., He has been associated with professional bodies and has numerous papers in National and International Journals to his credit.
He is chairman of Skill Council of Mining Sector. He was also a director in the board of Indian Iron and Steel Sector Council. He is the chairman of Bhubaneswar chapter of Mining Engineers Association of India (MEAI). He is Co-chair of FICCI mining committee and Chairperson of ICC National Expert Committee on mining and metals. He is also the founding member of FIMI- Sustainable Mining Initiative (SMI).
