Dr. S. Prakash, 57 yrs, is an internationally qualified surgeon with rich and varied experience in Health Insurance besides vast experience in the field of Patient Care and Healthcare Delivery in various parts of the globe.
As an Academician, he possesses experience in teaching at Universities of Middle East, Singapore and Malaysia. His articles published in 2020 in the Indian Journal of Communicable Diseases and Indian Journal of Emergency Medicine stand testimony to his added flair for continued learning and improving.
In more than a decade and a half tenure in health insurance, (2007-2023) he co-founded Star Health Insurance and rose to the position of a Managing Director in Star Health Insurance significantly driving and contributing to its exceptional growth from a meagre GWP of USD 2.5 million in 2007 to an enviable and impressive USD 1.56 billion by 2023.
His pivotal role in the implementation of a first of its kind ‘Mass Health Insurance Scheme’ in South India covering a population of close to 126 million lives with networking of 1000+ Hospitals, seeded and revolutionized the concept of access to health care aiding the public at large.
With over 20 years of clinical experience spanning India and overseas and his 16 years of rich expertise in the Health Insurance Industry, he has contributed immensely in bridging the gap between the various stakeholders of the Health Care Ecosystem largely benefitting the Health Insurance Industry.
Beyond his corporate leadership role in Star Health, Dr S Prakash has been the Chairperson, CII Tamil Nadu Healthcare Panel for three consecutive years and has held the position of Convenor for FICCI Tamil Nadu Insurance Panel and NatHealth too.
Presently, Dr S Prakash is the Head of the Committee on Common Empanelment of Hospitals – General Insurance Council of IRDAI. He is also a Member of the Advisory Committee of NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers).
Over the years, Dr S Prakash has been a recipient of numerous awards and honors from various arms of the State and Centre. One among the many accolades is ‘The World Health Day Award of Excellence,’ presented to him by the Hon’ble President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee for his remarkable contributions to Health Insurance underscoring his exceptional expertise in the realms of Healthcare and Health Insurance.
