Eminent cardiothoracic surgeon, brilliant academic, keen researcher, and a gifted statesman, Dr. Abhijat Sheth is a global thought leader in the medical sphere. A visionary man, tireless and unwavering in his drive, he has catapulted the National Board of Examinations to new acme under his presidency.

An illustrious alumnus of the Sheth KM School of Postgraduate Medicine and Research, Ahmedabad, Dr. Abhijat Sheth’s meteoric rise to the pinnacle of healthcare administration is prefaced by a long and distinguished career in cardiothoracic surgery. He worked as a Senior House Officer and Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, took his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians, Glasgow, in 2000, and worked at the St George’s Hospital, London with Professor Brendan P Madden taking a doctoral degree from the London University, UK. His individual contribution to the realm of academics has been exceptional – he has a large body of published works in journals such as Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and equally, the other celebrated academic forums.

Besides holding offices of high esteem in several professional bodies, and deeply committed to the cause of community betterment, Dr. Abhijat Sheth presently holds the twin high office of Director Medical services, Apollo Ahmedabad. His innovative approaches toward advances in healthcare systems has won him huge global acclaim.

Dr. Abhijat Sheth has been the heart and soul behind bringing in many seminal changes in the functioning of the National Board. He nurtures the pious mission to promote e-learning, skill development and inculcate greater ethical practice among the postgraduate medical student community, while striving to make the national board a friendlier, robust, and transparent institution. NBEMS has grown phenomenally under his dynamic leadership in last 7 years. With zero tolerance towards corruption and unethical practices, Dr Sheth has been the key to reform NBEMS as a result of which he has been nominated again by GoI to continue as President NBEMS for the second consecutive term, a big first in the history of NBEMS.

Dr. Abhijat Sheth is member of Board of Studies, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi.

He is member of Governing Council, State Health System Resource Centre, Government of Gujarat.

He is member of Professional Council of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH).

He has authored several research articles in national & international journals.

Some of the path breaking reforms under his able leadership include:

Increase in number of NBEMS Post graduate medical seats: NBEMS has more than tripled its PG medical seats in last 7 years without compromising on the quality.

Start of Post MBBS Diploma courses: NBEMS has launched two-years Post MBBS Diploma courses in 09 Broad Specialties to provide specialist manpower in the District Hospitals.

NBEMS programme in District Hospitals: NBEMS is committed to have more and more NBEMS courses in the District Hospitals including those which have been upgraded into a medical college.

Reservation of in-service candidates in the District Hospitals: From 2020, NBEMS has introduced reservation for in-service candidates in DNB courses in the district hospitals.

Sponsored Seat Scheme: NBEMS has successfully launched the sponsored seat scheme from 2020 wherein the State Governments can nominate in-service candidates for post-graduate and post-doctoral training in NBEMS accredited institutes.

Annual Review of Accreditation: Introduced in 2019-20, this is a quality control measure for NBEMS accredited hospitals.

Introduction of new courses: 25 new courses have been launched in last 2 years.

Fellowship Programme for International Students (FPIS): Hon`ble Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dr. Harsh Vardhan launched the scheme of FPIS on 1st July 2020. This is the first of its program on a national level allowing foreign post graduates to pursue Fellowship courses in India.

Good Clinical Practice Guidelines: Hon’ble Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dr. Harsh Vardhan launched the good clinical practice guidelines on 1st July 2020, which is an attempt of NBEMS to provide the guiding points to all NBEMS residents to follow the principles of ethical and professional conduct expected from a medical professional aimed at safety of doctors and patients alike. The second edition has recently been inaugurated by Hon’ble Union Minister of Health and family welfare, Govt of India.

NEET-PG, NEET MDS NEET SS: These national level high stakes exams have been conducted by NBEMS year after year with accuracy and transparency.

OSCE: objective structured clinical examination has been introduced in various specialties.

National Web Learning Programme (more than 4500 Webinar classes conducted) – conducting COVID 19 threat into an opportunity, NBEMS started online classes (in addition to the routine classes being taken by the hospitals) through dedicated portals for thousands of its trainees
