Dr. Nikhil D. Datar, a distinguished senior gynecologist , a law graduate and dedicated health rights activist, possesses a remarkable track record in both the medical and legal domains. With a wealth of experience as the Medical Director and Senior Gynecologist at Cloudnine Hospital Mumbai Dr. Datar has made significant contributions to healthcare. As an Honorary Professor at Maharashtra National Law University (Mumbai) and an ex-Head of the Unit at R N Cooper Municipal Hospital, he bridges the gap between medicine and law.
Dr Datar strongly believes in “death with dignity”. He is one of the first persons in the country to file his advance directive. His public interest litigation in the Bombay high court on “Citizens right to death with dignity” is bringing radical change in the medical and legal thought process about euthanasia.
Dr. Datar’s impactful legal case, Dr. Nikhil Datar Vs. Union of India, led to an amendment to the MTP Act and opened doors for over 300 women seeking court permission for termination of pregnancy beyond 20 weeks, all on a pro bono basis.
His advocacy for patient safety and healthcare quality is evident through his role as the Founder President of the Patient Safety Alliance, an NGO committed to empowering patients and supporting healthcare professionals to prevent medical errors.
Dr. Datar’s recognition extends beyond India, as he was interviewed by Aamir Khan on the popular TV show “Satyamev Jayate” for his groundbreaking work on gender-sensitive protocols for survivors of sexual assault. His contributions to the field were acknowledged when he was appointed to a high-level committee by WHO and the Government of India.
His accolades include a prestigious fellowship from the International Federation of Health and Human Rights Organizations in 2010, a Commonwealth fellowship from the UK in 2009 where he worked on patient safety, and the “Mehman-E-Watan” award from the Sindh Government, Pakistan, in 2006 for his healthcare contributions.
